Klappentext:
Scotland: An Archaeological Guide
from earliest times to the twelfth century A.D.
Euan W. MacKie
Euan MacKie, after a stimulating general introduction, describes the major archaeological monuments and sites by geographical zones so that visitors will find a succession of sites of many kinds in each area, described in the order they are encountered on the ground.
Of particular interest are the information on antiquities which have not received much attention in the standard works on Scotland—such as the Early Christian remains and the Pictish stones—and the new theories about the astronomical function of some prehistoric standing stones.
The Guide is designed to help the appreciation of Scotland's pre-history and early history as a continuous story and also to show how the study of the Roman and later sites—whose origin and function are known from written records—may help towards a better understanding of prehistoric sites.
Euan MacKie is Assistant Keeper (Archaeological and Anthropological Collections) at the Hunterian Museum of the University of Glasgow. After a short spell of excavation in Central America, he has been researching mainly into the Iron Age and the brochs in Scotland, and more recently into the archaeological implications of Professor Thorn's astronomical theories about the stone circles.
