Preface:
This book is intended as a handbook for students of English who want to acquire a wider knowledge of the language of the United States as it is used today in speaking and in writing.
It is also intended for those who have some experience of American English and who would like to systematize what they have already found and to get a more complete picture of American usage, with particular regard to cases where it differs from British English.
I am deeply grateful to Professor Albert H. Marckwardt of Princeton University, who devoted much time and interest to this work, and who kindly revised the manuscript of the book.
My thanks are also due to Mr. Geoffrey O'Kane, B.A., for much valuable information, especially on contemporary British vocabulary and phraseology.
Though no written presentation could possibly be substituted for the first-hand experience gained by living in the country itself, it is my hope that this book will prove to be of some assistance to students of English and that it will also be an incentive to further studies of American English.
