Klappentext:
New York, resplendent city of skyscrapers, is for most people either a symbol or a dream - a symbol of American confidence and prosperity, a dream of an unattainable standard of material comfort.
Yet even those who have never seen its incomparable skyline from the sea nor gazed down from the air at its innumerable shimmering lights have formed some kind of mental image of this remarkable city.
For New York is without doubt the most widely publicised city anywhere - the Statue of Liberty, Wall Street, Broadway, Central Park - they are all known without necessarily having been encountered face-to-face.
For some, reality does not always live up to illusion, for others it surpasses even the imagination with its staggering variety of styles, sounds, spectacles, traditions and nationalities.
Who would have envisaged this fantastic development in a little over 300 years from a fort and a few settlers' huts into a booming city of eight million people? It is incredible to think that Manhattan Island was purchased from the Indians for a few rolls of cloth and some odd trinkets, worth about twenty-five dollars!
New York has seen war, civil riot, fire, disease, gang warfare and corruption. But this is the sensational side, for the city is of course the commercial, financial and cultural centre of the nation and has provided a new home for hundreds of thousands of immigrants, transforming them into citizens along with the descendants of the early colonists.
It is surely fitting that New York should have been chosen as the headquarters of the United Nations Organisation.
The well-known author Stephen Potter, who writes an introduction to this book, points out that New York has never set itself up as a tourist showplace and is essentially By, With and For its own people.
And photographer Don Hunstein has brilliantly evoked the fluctuating moods and ever-changing appearance of the city, and captured much of the warmth, emotion and high spirits of the New Yorkers themselves.
