Klappentext:
In his brilliant new novel, and fifty-first book, John Updike tells the story of Gertrude and Claudius, King and Queen of Denmark, before the action of Shakespeare's Hamlet begins. Using details of the ancient legends that were the inspiration for the play, Updike brings to exquisitely observed life Gertrude's girlhood as the daughter of King Rorik, her arranged marriage to the man who becomes King Hamlet, and her heated, middle-aged affair with her husband's younger brother.
As only he could, John Updike recasts a tale of medieval violence and presents a compulsively readable case for the couple that Shakespeare only hinted at. Gertrude's warmth and lucidity, Claudius's soldierly yet peaceable powers of command, are, seen afresh against a background of fond intentions and familial dysfunction, on a stage darkened by the ominous shadow of a sullen disaffected prince.

JOHN UPDIKE was born in 1932, in Shillington, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Harvard College in 1954 and spent a year in England at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art in Oxford.
From 1955 to 1957 he was a member of the staff of the New Yorker, to which he has contributed poems, short stories, essays and book reviews. Since 1957 he has lived in Massachusetts. He is the father of four children. His novels have won the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, the American Book Award, the National Book Critics Circle Award and the Howells Medal.

»Creative oomph is unrepressed - Updike displays all the eagerness of a writer in first discovery of his powers« (SCOTLAND ON SUNDAY)
»This is exalted writing, proving that, once again, in defiance of time, Updike is perfecting his own unique gifts. He is now sui generis; there are no comparisons« (SPECTATOR)
»A novel of accumulated wisdom, with Mr Updike in full control of his subtle, crafty and incessantly observing art« (THE NEW YORK TIMES OF BOOK REVIEW)
